By the (angels) who tear out (the souls of the wicked) with violence; | By those who drag forth to destruction, | I swear by the angels who violently pull out the souls of the wicked, | |
By those who gently draw out (the souls of the blessed); | By the meteors rushing, | And by those who gently draw out the souls of the blessed, | |
And by those who glide along (on errands of mercy), | By the lone stars floating, | And by those who float in space, | |
Then press forward as in a race, | By the angels hastening, | Then those who are foremost going ahead, | |
Then arrange to do (the Commands of their Lord), | And those who govern the event, | Then those who regulate the affair. | |
One Day everything that can be in commotion will be in violent commotion, | On the day when the first trump resoundeth. | The day on which the quaking one shall quake, | |
Followed by oft-repeated (commotions): | And the second followeth it, | What must happen afterwards shall follow it. | |
Hearts that Day will be in agitation; | On that day hearts beat painfully | Hearts on that day shall palpitate, | |
Cast down will be (their owners') eyes. | While eyes are downcast | Their eyes cast down. | |
They say (now): "What! shall we indeed be returned to (our) former state? | (Now) they are saying: Shall we really be restored to our first state | They say: Shall we indeed be restored to (our) first state? | |
"What! - when we shall have become rotten bones?" | Even after we are crumbled bones? | What! when we are rotten bones? | |
They say: "It would, in that case, be a return with loss!" | They say: Then that would be a vain proceeding. | They said: That then would be a return occasioning loss. | |
But verily, it will be but a single (Compelling) Cry, | Surely it will need but one shout, | But it shall be only a single cry, | |
When, behold, they will be in the (full) awakening (to Judgment). | And lo! they will be awakened. | When lo! they shall be wakeful. | |
Has the story of Moses reached thee? | Hath there come unto thee the history of Moses? | Has not there come to you the story of Musa? | |
Behold, thy Lord did call to him in the sacred valley of Tuwa:- | How his Lord called him in the holy vale of Tuwa, | When his Lord called upon him in the holy valley, twice, | |
"Go thou to Pharaoh for he has indeed transgressed all bounds: | (Saying:) Go thou unto Pharaoh - Lo! he hath rebelled - | Go to Firon, surely he has become inordinate. | |
"And say to him, 'Wouldst thou that thou shouldst be purified (from sin)?- | And say (unto him): Hast thou (will) to grow (in grace)? | Then say: Have you (a desire) to purify yourself: | |
"'And that I guide thee to thy Lord, so thou shouldst fear Him?'" | Then I will guide thee to thy Lord and thou shalt fear (Him). | And I will guide you to your Lord so that you should fear. | |
Then did (Moses) show him the Great Sign. | And he showed him the tremendous token. | So he showed him the mighty sign. | |
And he will be in a life of Bliss, | Then he will be in blissful state | So he shall be in a life of pleasure, | |
In a Garden on high, | In a high garden | In a lofty garden, | |
The Fruits whereof (will hang in bunches) low and near. | Whereof the clusters are in easy reach. | The fruits of which are near at hand: | |
"Eat ye and drink ye, with full satisfaction; because of the (good) that ye sent before you, in the days that are gone!" | (And it will be said unto those therein): Eat and drink at ease for that which ye sent on before you in past days. | Eat and drink pleasantly for what you did beforehand in the days gone by. | |
And he that will be given his Record in his left hand, will say: "Ah! Would that my Record had not been given to me! | But as for him who is given his record in his left hand, he will say: Oh, would that I had not been given my book | And as for him who is given his book in his left hand he shall say: O would that my book had never been given me: | |
"And that I had never realised how my account (stood)! | And knew not what my reckoning! | And I had not known what my account was: | |
"Ah! Would that (Death) had made an end of me! | Oh, would that it had been death! | O would that it had made an end (of me): | |
"Of no profit to me has been my wealth! | My wealth hath not availed me, | My wealth has availed me nothing: | |
"My power has perished from me!"... | My power hath gone from me. | My authority is gone away from me. | |
(The stern command will say): "Seize ye him, and bind ye him, | (It will be said): Take him and fetter him | Lay hold on him, then put a chain on him, | |
"And burn ye him in the Blazing Fire. | And then expose him to hell-fire | Then cast him into the burning fire, | |
"Further, make him march in a chain, whereof the length is seventy cubits! | And then insert him in a chain whereof the length is seventy cubits. | Then thrust him into a chain the length of which is seventy cubits. | |
"This was he that would not believe in Allah Most High. | Lo! He used not to believe in Allah the Tremendous, | Surely he did not believe in Allah, the Great, | |
"And would not encourage the feeding of the indigent! | And urged not on the feeding of the wretched. | Nor did he urge the feeding of the poor. | |
"So no friend hath he here this Day. | Therefor hath he no lover here this day, | Therefore he has not here today a true friend, | |
"Nor hath he any food except the corruption from the washing of wounds, | Nor any food save filth | Nor any food except refuse, | |
"Which none do eat but those in sin." | Which none but sinners eat. | Which none but the wrongdoers eat. | |
So I do call to witness what ye see, | But nay! I swear by all that ye see | But nay! I swear by that which you see, | |
And what ye see not, | And all that ye see not | And that which you do not see. | |
That this is verily the word of an honoured messenger; | That it is indeed the speech of an illustrious messenger. | Most surely, it is the Word brought by an honored Messenger, | |
Their abode will be the Garden. | Lo! the Garden will be his home. | Then surely the garden-- that is the abode. | |
They ask thee about the Hour,-'When will be its appointed time? | They ask thee of the Hour: when will it come to port? | They ask you about the hour, when it will come. | |
Wherein art thou (concerned) with the declaration thereof? | Why (ask they)? What hast thou to tell thereof? | About what! You are one to remind of it. | |
With thy Lord in the Limit fixed therefor. | Unto thy Lord belongeth (knowledge of) the term thereof. | To your Lord is the goal of it. | |
Thou art but a Warner for such as fear it. | Thou art but a warner unto him who feareth it. | You are only a warner to him who would fear it. | |
The Day they see it, (It will be) as if they had tarried but a single evening, or (at most till) the following morn! | On the day when they behold it, it will be as if they had but tarried for an evening or the morn thereof. | On the day that they see it, it will be as though they had not tarried but the latter part of a day or the early part of it.
